The Oberheim Prommer is a Sampler/Programmer designed in the USA and manufactured in Japan in 1984. It's a rare Oberheim instrument. The Prommer is a unique machine because it allows you to sample sounds intended to be burned onto eprom (a kind of ROM) which can be installed on Vintage drum machines like the Linndrum LM-2, Linn LM-1, Sequential Circuits Drumtraks, Oberheim DX or DMX... The sound is sampled in 8 bits, with a choice of frequencies. The Prommer features classic editing tools for creating percussion samples. It's with this type of machine that Roger Linn (Linndrum) or Oberheim put the samples of their famous rhythm boxes on ROM. The Prommer's internal software and audio algorithms were created specifically for percussive sounds with wide dynamics (one of the secrets of Linndrum's success).
The Oberheim Prommer can also be used simply to copy Rom onto Eprom, whether it's sounds or internal software.
The Oberheim Prommer can also be used as a sampler, playing the sounds in its memory over a twelve-octave range, and up to 16 sounds can be stored in the Prommer's memory; sounds can be looped or Sustain added, or filtered with a low-pass filter.
The main function of the Oberheim Prommer is of course the creation of eprom for the Linndrum, making it a durable purchase for a large recording studio that can offer new services, or for artists who make heavy use of their Linndrum.
